Sunderland & South Tyneside CAMRA supports over 100 pubs & clubs in the branch area serving cask ales & real cider. We also encourage the remaining pubs in the area to try cask ales.
The number of pubs serving cask ale at any given time is fluid as properties change landlords & ownership. In recent years many pubs have strugged to survive, often due to "punitive" taxation & what is known as the beer tie.
In this current economic environment some local pubs face the most difficult times seen for many years. CAMRA asks anyone using this site to be our information source & keep us informed of changes to the information held on these pages. (Please contact our 'Pubs Officer' with any information.)

"Pub of the Year":
Each year members of the branch vote the "Pub of the Year" from a ballot sheet of pubs in the current edition of the CAMRA publication "The Good Beer Guide". - "The 2014 Pub of the Year".

  • All Sunderland & South Tyneside CAMRA area real ale pubs are listed on the new CAMRA national pub database called WHATPUB. This is now availible to the general public

  • SPILE is used by NE CAMRA as a North East regional Pubs Database & it is also available to all.
  • "Good Beer Guide (2015)":
Every year the publication team of the CAMRA "Good Beer Guide" allocate the branch a number of entry slots in this prestigious national publication. Currently Sunderland & South Tyneside CAMRA have 22 entries.

These entries are filled by the current "Pub of the Year" competition winner & the 21 highest scoring pubs on the CAMRA National Beer Scoring System (NBSS).
After each pub visit all CAMRA members are encouraged to score the quality of the cask ales served & enter those scores onto the NBSS. As an ordinary CAMRA member this is an important task as your beer quality scores on NBSS directly determine which local pubs are given GBG places.
    "LocAle Pubs":
"LocAle" is a popular national CAMRA campaign to match Local Pubs with Local Brewers. Details of the campaign can be found here.

Pubs in the Sunderland & South Tyneside Area signed up to the Locale Campaign are listed here.
    Local "CAMRA Discount" Pubs:
CAMRA encourages pubs to join the "CAMRA national discount scheme." Details of pubs in our area offering discount are listed here.

    Real Ale Trails
Sunderland & South Tyneside CAMRA also produce a "Real Ale" Trail leaflets of Sunderland, South Shields & Washington. These leaflets are availible in local pubs & Tourist Offices, else an e-versions are available HERE for Download.
